The most trusted hairstylists are getting more attention, with the number of new hires at salons rising steadily over the past few years.
The average salary for a salon’s hairstylis is $140,000.
And although they may be considered a relatively small workforce, they are now seen as the go-to hairstylista for many aspiring hairdresses, and that makes them valuable, says Sarah O’Reilly, author of The Hairdresser’s Guide to Success.
“The most valued and admired salons in the country are the ones that are hiring new people every day,” she says.
“I would say that there are about two to three salons that are doing well every year that are paying them well and are hiring very well.”
According to the Institute of Hair and Makeup Professionals, there were more than 1.6 million salons across the country in 2011.
That number grew to 2.1 million in 2012, 2.3 million in 2013, and 2.6 in 2014.
The number of salons has also increased significantly over the last few years, with more than a third of the salons surveyed last year saying they were hiring.
But the pay at saloons is not the only reason why many salons are hiring, says O’Connor.
“A lot of the people that I talk to are going to ask if they can have a job there and they want a saloon, and they just don’t want to go into a traditional saloon,” she explains.
“They’re looking for something different, that is different and they’re looking at it as a place to earn a living, so it’s a very rewarding opportunity to be working there,” says O. “They also like the community, because they don’t have to worry about the weather or the weatherman.
They can work and enjoy it all.”
